What a nice day today for our school wide Terry Fox run. We each got a sticker/tattoo and a small sign indicating who we are running for (we got to chose who we wanted to run for). Right after lunch, in our classroom we did some stretches, got our stickers ready, then headed outside to join the rest of the school in the run. We ran in a huge circle around the field at the top of the hill. Everyone worked really hard to get as many laps as possible.
If you still wish to donate a Toonie for Terry, the school will be collecting until Friday. There are prizes for the class who raises the most money.
Following our Terry Fox run, we got together with the other Grade 2 classes and started a comparison activity of the Oompa Loompas from the 2 movies that have been made. First, in our individual classes, we had an extensive discussion on the characteristics of Oompa Loompas from the book, then we came together. We will be taking these characteristics and creating our own Oompa Loompas!
Finally, in math we continued our work on increasing patterns. Today we got to build different increasing patterns with pattern blocks. We also discovered that there is more then one way they can be created. Ask about the three different increasing patterns we learned about today!
Reminders:
- First day of swimming tomorrow. Please send your child to school wearing their bathing suit; this will make things run more smoothly at the pool. Do not forget to bring a towel, fresh underwear, and plastic bag to put all the wet items in after swimming.
- Toonie for Terry donations will be accepted until Friday.
- Keep practicing those word wall words at home, there will be a quiz on Friday

Today was a busy day. We got a new student in our class and we all did a fantastic job at making her feel welcome as she is settling into the new routine.
For literacy, we continued to discuss family words within our word wall words by creating lists in our books of all the words that belong to their respective family. As we are improving our writing skills (putting spaces between our words, using proper punctuation, and writing neater), today we discussed adjectives.
We learned that adjectives are describing words and can be used anytime we are writing to make it more detailed and juicy. Also, that thinking about our 5 senses, touch, hearing, taste, smell, and sight, can help us to come up with good adjectives to use when describing something or events in our writing.
To practice using adjectives, we looked at a few different pictures and had to come up with words that would best describe each picture, again thinking about our 5 senses.
We had library again today. It is very important that we try to remember to turn those library books back in on the correct day so that we can sign out a new one.
In math, we continued increasing patterns. On the projector, together, we extended a variety of increasing patterns using different attributes as well as stating the pattern rule.
Tomorrow is Run for Terry Fox Day! The school is doing a fundraiser there will be prizes for certain amounts of money raised. As a class, we watched a short documentary on Terry Fox. We learned all about why he ran across the country and what some of his goals were.
Keeping in the spirit of Terry Fox we ask that everyone wear blue or pink for cancer or, if you do not have either of those colors, tomorrow is also a day of awareness of the harm towards Aboriginals when they were forced into residential schools; orange is the color of awareness there.
Reminders:
-Swimming starts Thursday. Please have your child come to school with their bathing suit on, as well as have a towel and plastic bag for the wet items after swimming.

Welcome back! Hope you all had a good, long weekend.
Thank you to all the families who came to the Meet the Teacher meetings on Thursday evening and Friday morning. I appreciate you taking the time to come meet me and set goals for your child for this school year. If you were unable to make it, please contact me and we will arrange a time for you to come in. You can reach me by calling the school at (403) 777-6610 or email at algrunert@cbe.ab.ca.
Today in literacy we working on our writing skills. As we wrote out our new word wall words, in a list to bring home and in our journals with sentences, we were being aware of staying within the lines, printing neatly, and using spaces between the words. Our new words this week are:
-his
-is
-an
-and
-can
-all
-call
-land
-hand
-small
We talked about family words today because our words this week are full of them! We recognized the families; is, and, an, and all.
In math, we continued repeating patterns, but today we started to learn all about increasing patterns. At first we discussed what we thought increasing patterns means, some ideas we said are:
-making patterns bigger
-making then grow longer
-making patterns harder
-adding more to a pattern
So far, we have discovered that it is similar to skip counting were a pattern slowing grows as it is repeated. It can increase by 1s, 2s, 3s, and so on.
Now that we have found a new, magnetic wrapper for Mr. Wonka's new candy bar, we still need to find a material that will allow the magnetic force to attract around. So today, we explored magnets passing through different materials. The materials we tested were; thin plastic, hard plastic, wood, aluminum, paper, fabric, felt, and cardboard. Following the experiment and a long discussion over each material, altogether, we came to the conclusion that the thin plastic was the best material to use. It is thin, flexible, waterproof, and all strengths of magnets can pass through it. All of these characteristics offer a durable and reliable option for a new candy bar cover that will travel all around the world.
Reminders:
-Tomorrow we have library, please return all books!
-Swimming starts Thursday, please return forms and money ASAP - Our swimming time is 10:10-10:50. The bus will be leaving the school at 9:55 to go to the pool, and leaving the pool at 11:05 to come back to school.
-Our Terry Fox Run is coming up on Wednesday September 30th at 12:45. Please consider donating a Toonie for Terry to support the Terry Fox Foundation. Please send donations in by Wednesday Sept. 30th, or if it is more convenient for you donations can be made online at http://www.terryfox.org/SchoolRun/ .

Happy long weekend! Even though it was short, we had another busy week.
We have been working hard in literacy, practicing our word wall words. Using them in sentences, recognizing them as we do work in other subject areas, and sounding them out when writing, as well as recognizing some of their family words while reading books and doing large group work. We also have been concentrating on printing neatly and putting spaces between our words. Our word wall has already grown so much and it sure has been helpful when completing learning tasks.
Today in math we did centers. There were four centers in total, all focused on a different math strand. The station were:
1) practicing place value to 1000
2) building patterns with pattern blocks and writing and labeling them in our math journal
3) treasure hunt - a dice game that had adding, number recognition, and following instructions
4) penny shuffle - a game that involved adding 3 different numbers together to get one final score
It was a lot of fun to work through the different stations as we continue to build our math skills.
Yesterday, in science, we discovered which material that will work for Mr. Wonka's new candy bar; it is iron! Now that we know what material is attracted to magnets and what objects are and are not attracted to magnets we can, soon, start the next steps of our project to help Mr. Wonka's factory.
Reminders:
- 'Meet the Teacher' conferences are tonight and tomorrow morning. Please try to be as on time as you can for there many are scheduled close together and we do not want to keep others waiting for too long.
- Swimming starts next week. A form went home today regarding fees, eligibility to swim, and swimming level. This form needs to be returned by Monday, September 28. You may bring it to the 'Meet the Teacher'.
- Terry Fox run is Wednesday, September 30. The school is doing a 'Toonie for Terry' fundraiser, so if you wish to donate, you can bring a toonie before Wednesday.
- Library on Tuesday, please return library books so that your child can sign out a new one

Today, with our word wall words, we practiced using them in sentences. Altogether we did fill in the blanks, then on our own we had to create a new sentence using each of the word wall words. Even though it is a short week, we are still going to have a quiz on our word wall words on Thursday.
In Phys. Ed. we got to play a new game called 'Tiger Tail'. Everyone had a pinnie tucked into a pocket. As everyone ran around the gym we had to try and grab other peoples tails. When we grabbed someones, we threw it at their feet and they had to do a specific fitness activity the Mr Sadowsky decided before hand. There were mats as obstacles all around the gym to make the game a little more challenging.
Every Tuesday we have library. Today, it was fun looking through and reading new books. To start, we are only allowed to take one book out until we learn how to be responsible by bringing our books back every week. Once we show good responsibility for a while, then we can take out two books.
We may have found the winning material for Mr Willy Wonka's new chocolate bar! As we are starting to eliminate materials that are not attracted to magnets, today, we tested a bunch of different metals. First we made our predictions, then did the testing. Only one metal worked. Can you guess from the list of metals below, which one is attracted to magnets;
-copper
-brass
-iron
-zinc
-steel (m)
-silver
-steel (s)
-aluminum
Finally, we discussed the last pillar of care, 'Care for Learning'. Some of the things we brainstormed were;
-take breaks/exercise
-take your time, do not rush your work
-don't get upset or frustrated, try again
-sound it out
-ask for help when you need it
We said that taking care for our learning is very important and help us to get smarter and learn new things as we grow up and move to higher grades in school.
Reminders:
- 'Meet the Teacher' conferences are Thursday and Friday, schedule a time online

Welcome back and hope all of you enjoyed the lovely weekend.
This morning we looked at a new set of word wall words. We noticed that some of them are even from the same family, like box and fox. We have written the words down and are bringing them home, and since it is a short week, our quiz will be on Thursday. Our words are as follows:
-as
-has
-fox
-box
-mix
-egg
-jam
-pet
-nap
-big
In Phys Ed today we started to practice running for our school wide Terry Fox run that will be next week.
We have finished repeating patterns in math, so today we did some work with place value. After we worked together, learning the difference between ones, tens, and hundreds, we got to show what we know using base ten blocks.
We had music again today and had a quiz on the music notes we have already learned! We also got to learn a couple new ones.
Finally, we talked about the 3rd pillar of care, which was 'Care for Place'. Altogether, we brainstormed what we do both inside and outside the school to care for the place we learn. Some ideas we came up with were:
-pick up and throw away garbage
-push in chairs
-remove hazards from spaces
-walk in hallways and classrooms
-clean up after lunch
-make sure school materials are in their proper places
We followed this with drawing some of the ways we 'Care for Place' on a picture of a school or classroom, that was already printed out.
Reminders:
-Book orders are due tomorrow
-Meet the Teacher conferences Thursday afternoon and Friday, book your appointment online (note went home today)

Happy Friday everyone! We all worked very hard to make it a fantastic week that went by fast.
After our morning routine, we had our first word wall spelling test. Everyone did very well and those words are now on our class word wall!
In Phys Ed we played dodgeball; every person was for themselves. It was especially fun to get the teachers out.
On Friday's, in math, we do something different then we have been the rest of the week. So today, we continued practicing single digit addition. Right now we are able to use a variety of manipulatives to help us find the answers we cannot figure out in our head.
We are continuing to explore magnets in science. Today we started to eliminate which materials will not work for Willy Wonkas' new candy bar wrapper that needs to stick to a magnetic machine. So far, we have figured out that a wrapper made from wood will not work because there is no metal or magnetic material in it. Next week, we will continue this search.
This afternoon we had our second fire drill practice. Once again, we did very well being quiet leaving the school and waiting to be able to come back into the school. Following the drill, the entire school demonstrated 'Care for Place' (one of our 4 pillars of care) by picking up garbage around the school grounds.
Reminders:
- bring a pair of labeled headphones
- book orders are due Tuesday, September 22, 2015
- meet the teacher meetings are Thursday and Friday
- early dismissal at 11:00am on Friday

Today, we practice our word wall words more. We had to find the missing letter in each word and unscramble them too. Tomorrow we have a spelling test on these words. Here are the words again to practice tonight.
-on
-not
-but
-at
-had
-in
-did
-get
-red
-hot
In science we talked about which material we think Willy Wonka should use for a new candy bar that will stick to a magnetic machine. We each wrote down a prediction of what material we think he should use and explained why. Tomorrow we will be testing different metals to see which stick to a magnet.
In Phys Ed we did stations again, but today, some of them were different.
For math we did a repeating patterns assessment. We got a big piece of paper and made as many different repeating patterns as we could. Then we had to write the pattern rule and circle the core of the pattern. We did very well on this activity.
Today, we got to go to music. We wrote and circled around music notes. At the end of class, we created a song about music altogether.

Today in science we explored what magnets stick to and what they don't stick to. On a chart we wrote down the different objects we were using and had to predict whether or not they would be attracted to the magnet. After we made our predictions, we got to explore and determine if we were right on our predictions or not.
In health we are continuing to learn about the four pillars of care. Today we discussed 'Caring for Self'. Altogether, we brainstormed many ways we can take care or ourselves. Some ideas we came up with are:
-practice self control
-eat plenty of healthy food
-drink plenty of water
-don't hurt ourselves
-exercise everyday
-keep yourself safe
We also discussed what doing these things looks like and feels like and why we Care for Self.
We are continuing to move through stations in Phys Ed. Everyday we learn new ways we can play and have fun with the different types of equipment.
When we have been working on one thing for a while or start to get a little antsy, we have a quick brain break; today we used a program called GoNoodle. It is on the computer and we follow along from the projector on the board. We have an avatar that grows every time 10 activities are completed. Today, we ran in a hurdle race and got the gold medal!
Reminders:
- meet the teacher forms are due tomorrow
- please return technology form

Good Afternoon,
Luckily it wasn't too cold out today because we had our first fire drill practice. Our class did a very good job of lining up and waiting quietly outside.
In Grade 2, we have been doing a novel study on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Today we read that Charlie got the last golden ticket! We also joined the other two classes and Ms. Binks read us a letter that we all received from Mr Willy Wonka himself. He is coming to us with a project to help create and develop a new machine, for his factory, that will pick up wrapped candy bars and put them in a box. Being that we are studying magnets right now in science, we came up with the idea of creating a magnetic machine that will pick up candy bars that are wrapped in magnetic material. We are very excited to start this project!
We had a discussion today about big and small problems and how we can solve them. Focusing on small problems we learned 9 different problem solving strategies we can use. In a small group we chose one of the strategies and acted them out. The 9 problem solving strategies we can use are:
-walk away
-talk it out
-make a deal
-ignore it
-tell them to stop
-wait and cool off
-go to another game
-share and take turns
-apologize
Remember to continue practicing those word wall words.
Reminders:
- Meet the Teacher forms due back Thursday
- Technology form due asap
- Bring a set of labeled headphones to use computers and IPads

Happy Monday! Today was a very busy day and we all worked really hard.
We started the Daily 5 program this morning. We each got to chose an activity (either work word, writing practice, read to someone, or read to self) that we did for 10 minutes.
We also started looking at word wall words today. There are 10 words, which we wrote down and are bringing home today to practice all week. As we were talking about long and short vowel sounds last week, we noticed that all of the words have a short vowel sound. Be sure to practice the words at home too; practice spelling them, using them in sentences, finding rhymes, etc. Our words are:
-on
-not
-but
-at
-had
-in
-did
-get
-red
-hot
Phys Ed was a lot of fun today! We got to be creative and do equipment exploration. There were five stations set up around the gym and at each station and we got to explore all the different ways to use the equipment.
In math, we continued looking at repeating patterns. Today we learned about the terms core, pattern rule, and attributes. We used linking cubes to create and write down a variety of patterns that each had different pattern rules and attributes.
Finally, in science we were given a bunch of magnets that we got to experiment with. Our task was to walk around the classroom and find all the things that could and could not stick to the magnets. We followed with a discussion on what we noticed about magnets; i.e., what they stick and don't stick to (objects and materials), as well as all the different ways they can be used in everyday life. Can you help us think of where else magnets can be and are used around our house and community?
Reminders:
-**tomorrow we have library, so please bring back all library books
-if everyone could please bring a pair of headphones from home, labeled and in a ziplock bag, to use the computers and IPads
-welcome back BBQ lunch is tomorrow - if you did not return the yellow form, please bring a lunch
-return 'Meet the Teacher' form as soon as possible
-return technology form as soon as possible
We started the Daily 5 program this morning. We each got to chose an activity (either work word, writing practice, read to someone, or read to self) that we did for 10 minutes.

Welcome to Grade 2! I am very happy to finally be here at Beddington and thrilled to spend the year with your children.
This past week has been a very busy one. In literacy we started talking about the Daily 5. We set up a wall with expectations that we developed together and went through the variety of activities that will help build our reading and writing skills over the year. We also explored long and short vowel sounds and arranging words into alphabetical order.
In math we started repeating patterns. We discussed the different types of patterns and create some of our own. I encourage you to help your child search for patterns in your home, at the park, or elsewhere in the community that they can share, in class, this week.
We have begun exploring magnets in science. We made a KWL chart, followed by a Bill Nye video that we watched with the other Grade 2 classes and a response in our sketchbooks. This week we will start experimenting with magnets, so stay tuned to hear about our discoveries!
On Friday, we had our welcome back assembly. We got to meet all the teachers and new students that are joining us at Beddington this year. We can't wait to explore, discover, learn, and have fun in Grade 2!
Reminders:
Tuesday is our welcome back BBQ lunch. Also, is you have not returned your technology form, please do so ASAP as students cannot use the IPads or computers until it is returned.
