One more half day until the break!

Today we had our regular morning meeting, with a twist. Once we figured out how many days we were in school, we practiced skip counting a bunch of different ways from 70-100. Why from 70? Because today was the 70th day of school and we used skip counting to figure out how many days until the 100th day of school.

After Daily 5 we did our word wall quiz. It will be nice to have a break from those for a little while.

Following recess we did math centers again!

Right after lunch we joined Mr. Fisher and Ms. Zimmerman's classes and did some buddy read before caroling in the gym again.

Ater caroling we all got together again and used our measuring knowledge to mix together some ingredients for salt dough. Ask me what we did with the salt dough...

To end the day, we practiced the 4 winter/Christmas songs we will be singing tomorrow before the movie.

Reminders:
-Tomorrow is early dismissal at 11:00

Wednesday, December 16, 2015

Today was a fun day. To start the day we did our regular morning meeting, then the whole school met in the gymnasium do sing some christmas songs. Some of us even got chosen to play the bells in front of the school to one of the songs.

Following the caroling assembly we had Phys. Ed. For the remainder of the time before recess we practiced our word wall words for tomorrows quiz. We got to choose an activity and we could work independently or with a partner. Our words are listed below to practice tonight at home.

Group A: cats, pigs, beds, bugs, tops, mops, digs, hugs, pats, his
Group B: candy, went, sent, take, like, puppy, time, didn't, by, my

After recess we did an art activity. Have you ever seen the northern lights? Some of us have. We also know that there are northern lights right here is Alberta! They only come out at night and they are easily seen when it is very dark out at night. Another name for them is Auroras. Did you know that sometimes you can hear them? If you listen carefully they almost make a singing or whistling sound as they move and change shapes and colors.
Then, we created our own northern lights using paint and pastels. If you look below you will see pictures of the process to completing the art pieces and what some of the finished products look like.
Step one was to paint hills, mountains, and trees with white paint along the bottom half of our page.
Step two was to create shapes and colors of the northern lights using oil pastels.
-as we were working with the pastels some of us drew with the tips to make fine lines, some used the side of pastels to make a thick line with texture, some blended colors together using their fingers or a kleenex.
All of the final pieces look amazing. Again, take a look below!

This afternoon we had music. Our last music class of 2015.

For the rest of the afternoon we had "ketchups". This is a time for us to complete any work that we have not finished over the past couple weeks. A few items we worked on during this time were:
-dioramas
-letter to Santa
-northern lights art
-building a healthy plate
-healthy snack placemats
-word wall words practice

To end the day, we got together with the other grade 2 classes and practice singing the Christmas songs we will be singing with the rest of the school tomorrow afternoon.

Reminders:
-Tomorrow is the last day to buy popcorn at lunch for the school wide movie on Friday.
-Early Dismissal on Friday at 11:00.

Monday, December 14, 2015

Today was a really good start to the week. We worked hard all day and this helped us to get a lot accomplished.

We are doing word wall words this week. The qui will be on Thursday as Friday is movie and popcorn day as well as early dismissal. Our words for this week are below.

Group A: cats, pigs, beds, bugs, tops, mops, digs, hugs, pats, his
Group B: candy, went, sent, take, like, puppy, time, didn't, by, my

After recess we added a few points to the L sections of our social studies KWL chart for the prairies unit we are currently doing. A few points we added were:
-Ablerta has six regions: grasslands, parklands, canadian shield, boreal forest, foothills, and rocky mountains
-the 3 prairie provinces have similar animals
-there are badlands in the prairies - hoodoos
Following Christmas break we will be continuing our prairies unit only our focus is going to change a bit. We will be learning about people from the past and present and the different types of jobs people have done and do today. These findings will lead us into a job fair, as a way of representing our learnings, mid January.

We also added to a chart we have about Ivan's Homes from the novel we are reading. Last week, we learned about the time that Ivan lived with Mack, his owner. So as a review of what we read, we added some points of what Ivan' life was like growing up and living with humans. We ended the morning by reading more of the story.

After lunch we continued and completed work on our dioramas of Ivan's domain in the mall. Most of us have finished this work, the rest will have some time tomorrow or later this week to finish their dioramas as well. Once they are all completed a picture will be posted. They all look fantastic and really represent what Ivan's home is like in the mall.

Reminders:
-Popcorn for $2 for Friday's movie. Mavricks will be starting to sell popcorn tomorrow at recess. It is pre-purchase only, all popcorn will be handed out Friday before the movie begins.

Friday, December 12, 2015

What a busy day, but thank goodness it is Friday. Time to have a relaxing weekend.

This morning we were given a little extra time for Daily 5 because we working really well. Before heading to Phys. Ed. we practiced our word wall words. Mrs. G wrote all 20 words on the board, in a random order, and all scrambled up. She erased the lists from the boards so we couldn't cheat, and we worked together to figure out which word was which and spell them correctly. Then we did our word wall quiz. Mrs. G is noticing how much we all have improved on our spelling. It is clear in our journal writing as well. Keep it up!

After recess, we reviewed the expectations for our dioramas. Then, we had the remainder of the time to work on them. For this time period, we finished tracing around the outside of our boxes, and measuring what we traced on the paper, in cm of course.

Following lunch we read to ourselves to cool down from our lunch break, then we had the rest of the afternoon to work on our dioramas. Monday afternoon will also be allocated time to finish them. They are looking really good so far. Take a look at some of the work we did today below!

Have a great Weekend!

Reminders:
-All library books need to be returned ASAP. A note will be sent home next week for any late books.

Wednesday, December 9, 2015

Today was an interesting day. Mr. Sadowsky was with us for the first half hour while Mrs. G was with the Kindergarten music class practicing for the concert tonight. We helped guide Mr. Sadowsky through our regular morning routine, then he took us on an art walk around the school (now I know how to guide you through the art walk tonight after our performance).

When Mrs. G came back, we got some more time for Daily 5. Then we practiced our word wall words by playing Bingo! That is always a fun game to play.

Before practicing our songs with Mr. Rattan in the gym, we started our healthy activity that was a continuation from yesterdays discussion. We quickly reviewed what a healthy snack is and brainstormed a few ideas together. Then, we went into creating our own placemats! We each got to choose a color, one of the four food group colors, and we started by drawing a picture of ourselves in the middle with our name underneath. Tomorrow we will add little pictures of our favorite healthy snack all around our head.

Then, it was our turn to rehearse for tonight. We are all ready to go!

Following recess, all the grade 2 classes got together. We learned a new game in the classroom then went and played it outside altogether (this was to make up for the Phys. Ed. time we lost today and will lose tomorrow). Ask me what the game is called!

Right after lunch we had some time to read to ourselves, then it was the school wide performance of the winter concert.  It was nice to watch and see what half the school has been doing with Mr. Rattan in music.
The concert took us right to the end of the day. It didn't seem like we did much, but it was also pretty busy.

Reminders:
-Concert and art walk tonight! Please be at the school, in our classroom, at 5:30.
-If you have not brought a box for the diorama yet, you still have a chance to send one. Unfortunately there was no time to start them today, however, we will be taking time tomorrow morning to work on them. Also, feel free to send any other materials the students wish to use that we may not have at the school.

Tuesday, 8 December 2015

Tuesday, December 8, 2015

This morning, after our regular routine, and before Phys. Ed., we read The One and Only Ivan. We learned all about Ivans home in the jungle, when he lived there as a baby. Then, he told us about the time he lived with Mack, his owner, at his house and at the mall.

After Phys. Ed. we practiced our word wall words with Mrs. Cokar, we had a choice as to how we practiced for about 15 minutes. Then Mrs. Cokar brought one of her books to read to us today.

To end the morning we did Health. Today we talked about healthy snacking. First we made a list of all our favorite snacks - strawberries and yogurt, orange cup, ice cream, bear paws, chips, bananas, etc., then, we looked through the list and circled all the items that were the most healthy. To wrap up the activity, with a partner, we discussed what healthy snacking means. We then came together, shared our ideas and came up with a final definition - A healthy snack is a snack that is nutritious and has foods from 2 or more food groups.

First thing after lunch we had music. We are all ready to go for our performance tomorrow evening!

For the remainder of the afternoon we planned our dioramas we are going to make for Ivan's domain. Mrs. G showed us pictures of different animal dioramas as examples of what will be making. Then we went into our own visual journals and designed what it will look like. We also included a list of materials we will need to create the dioramas.
If you can, please bring a box, about shoe box size, for the dioramas. Also, any other materials your child would like to use, you are more then welcome to send with them. Sending the boxes to school by Thursday would be great, as we are going to start the building process tomorrow.

Reminders:
-Tomorrow night is our concert. Please meet in our classroom at 5:30. Mrs. G will be with us while parents go enjoy the entire performance.
-All library books need to be returned to school by Thursday this week, if a book is late, you will be receiving a notice next week.

Monday, December 7, 2015

Welcome back, hope you all enjoyed your long weekend. If you were unable to make it on Thursday or Friday to meet with me, please call the school (403) 777-6610 or give me an email algrunert@cbe.ab.ca to set up a meeting time between now and the Holidays.

To start off the day, we did calendar during our morning meeting. We counted how many days there were unit the holidays, only 10 more days of school! Then we counted how many days until Christmas day, only 19! Boy that came fast.

After Daily 5 we took a look at our new word wall words for this week. They are listed below. We talked about how some of our words have blends like, "th" and "ck", as well as a lot of the words are spelt almost the same the only difference is the beginning letter, like just, must, last, and fast.

Group A: ten, hat, hot, sand, hand, pen, stop, and, up, a
Group B: send, pick, end, both, fast, last, must, just, bath, black

Following Phys Ed we wrote the words out 3 times in our books and put each word in a sentences that had 5 or more words.

After recess we did a fun activity. We had a discussion around snowflakes, a few things we said are:
-they come in different sizes
-they come in different shapes
-not 2 are the same, ever
-they are all unique
We compared the snowflakes to people. We are all different, unique, and special. If everyone was the same, or if all snowflakes are the same, we would get bored after a while. Being so different is what makes this world such an interesting and fun place to be, and our way of keeping it this way is to be respectful and kind toward each others differences.
Then we went ahead and made our own, unique, different, special snowflakes. We are going to hang them up in our classroom as a constant reminder of how our classroom in unique, special, interesting, and fun we are.  Take a look at our snowflakes below!

After lunch we read to ourselves for 15 minutes then we joined the other grade 2s for a Social Studies activity.
We are going to dig deeper into our prairie community after Christmas by focusing on a few points that we stated in our KWL chart at the start of the unit. So today, we wrapped up learning about the 3 prairie provinces by creating a venn diagram in our white visual journals. We had to do Alberta on one side, then got to choose one of the other 2 provinces for the other side. Ask me which province I compared with Alberta.

To end the day, we did a body break on GoNoodle and cleaned up the classroom.

Reminders:
-Winter Celebration Wednesday and Thursday. Our class performs on Wednesday, December 9! Meet Mrs. G in our classroom at 5:30pm.
-Thank you to those parents interested in joining our wee reads program! Please make sure that your green form is filled out and returned to your child's classroom teacher no later than Friday December 11. Our Calgary Reads coordinators will contact you about the training session being held on Tuesday December 15.

Thursday, 3 December 2015

Thursday, December 3, 2015

This morning, after our daily morning meeting and Daily 5, we had a chance to practice our work wall words one last time before the big quiz. After practicing for almost 20 minutes, we had a quick body break then started the quiz. We had to finish the quiz after recess. Mrs. G says that we did pretty good once again!

After we finished our quiz we did a journal writing related to our novel study. The topic for our writing was "If you could be any animal is the world, which animal would you be? Explain why you would be that animal."
Ask me what animal I would be and why. Tell me, what animal would you be??

Following lunch we had some quiet time to read to ourselves.

Then, we finished our health activity we started yesterday with the 4 food groups - cutting and pasting the appropriate items of food to the shape and group we got.

To end the day, some of us continued (and finished) working on our Healthy Alphabet worksheet. Those of us who were done had the opportunity to choose from two different winter worksheets. One was a word search with a winter word scramble on the other side, and the other was a word search where all the words had the word snow- in it.
The rest of us will get a chance to work on these as well in the next couple weeks before the break.

Have a good long weekend!

Reminders:
-No school for kids tomorrow
-Conferences tonight and tomorrow
-Book Fair still open

Wednesday, 2 December 2015

Wednesday, December 2, 2015

Tomorrow is our big quiz! To practice today, we tried to sort the words as many different ways as possible. A few ideas we came up with together were:
-all the words that start with the letter 't'
-all words that have the long e sound
-all the words that have an 'o' in them
Ask me the different ways that I sorted the words!

Here are the words one more time to practice tonight:
Group A: pup, bus, but, tub, I, his, dig, pot, sun, put, big, is, men, cat, am, on, not, dog, to, got, the, can, at, pet, get, let, fed, red, did, pan, had, fun, top, stop, fix, fox, hen, pen, mix, six, box

Group B:

In Phys Ed we did some more dancing! Again we warmed up with freeze dance, then we practiced the chicken dance. We ended the class by learning the bunny hop. Next week we are going to try to do a large group of the bunny hop.

After recess, for math, we started doing work with 2D shapes. Together we brainstormed as many different 2D shapes that we could think of and did a sorting activity on whiteboards.

We finished off the morning by reading more of The One and Only Ivan. Ask me about what is happening in the story. Parts of it are funny and other parts are sad. Also ask me how I am feeling about the story.

Right after lunch we had music. We are ready for the winter celebration next week. Can't wait to show you our musical talents!

To end the day we did a health activity around the 4 food groups. Together we brainstormed what the food groups are and all the possible foods that could be in each group. Then, we did a cut a paste activity. Each of us got a shape of food from one of the groups - either a fish, milk carton, cheese slice, steak, broccoli, orange, piece of bread, or a box of cereal. We traced our shape on the corresponding food group color, then cut pictures of foods from that group out of grocery flyers and magazines and pasted them to the shape.

Reminders:
-Student involved conferences tomorrow evening and Friday
-No school Friday

Tuesday, 1 December 2015

Tuesday, December 1, 2015

Today was a good, hard working day.

We started off the morning with Daily 5 and practice our 50 word wall words again by doing the tasks cards. Only 2 more days until the big quiz, so make sure to practice, practice, practice!

In Phys Ed we started doing some dancing. We warmed up with some freeze dance. Then we learned the Chicken Dance. Tomorrow we will be learning a new dance! Let me know you some of my moves.

Following Phys Ed, Mrs. Cokar was with us again. She read a story to us.

After recess we used our library time to look around the book fair items. We wrote down on a piece of paper all the books we would like to have one day. Some of us are bringing the list home today to show you. We can bring money tomorrow to buy books or wait to buy them when we come see Mrs. G on Thursday or Friday.

To start the afternoon, we read to ourselves as a cool down from lunch. Then we went into some social studies. In our visual journals, we kind of made a map of our community of Calgary. First, we brainstormed everything we knew about the parklands region of Alberta. Why the parklands? because that is what region Calgary is in! Then we drew a small picture of Calgary in the middle of the page, and a bunch of smaller pictures, with labels, around the city that represent the parklands.

As the day came to an end, we did ketchups. Some worked continued working on the page about Ivan, from our novel study, some worked on the Healthy Alphabet sheet we started yesterday, and those that got everything done had some free time.

Reminders:
-No School Friday
-Conference Thursday evening and Friday morning. Book a time online
-Book Fair on until Friday

Monday, 30 November 2015

Monday, November 30, 2015

This morning we got our 50 words for the week. Since it is a short week, the big quiz will be on Thursday. We did task cards again today, to practice our words. There were 5 options, we only had to choose one for today. The tasks we got to chose from were writing the words with our opposite hand, writing the word backwards, circle all the consonants, write the words in shapes, and writing the words tracing the outside of shapes. Ask me what task I chose to do!

Following are the two lists of words, they are also coming home with me today.

Group A: pup, bus, but, tub, I, his, dig, pat, sun, put, big, is, men, cat, am, on, not, dog, to, got, the, can, at, pet, get, let, fed, red, did, pan, had, fun, top, stop, fix, fox, hen, pen, mix, six, box

Group B: ran, use, place, make, making, help, here, want, nice, to, two, into, be, see, got, she, sheep, shop, queen, green, bee, ho, no, go, so, going, must, kind, find, gave, do, the, doing, that, them, day, may, made, was, of, if, a, us, some, come, home, fun, run, funny, running

After recess, we had math. We watched a short video on the gorilla, Ivan, from our novel study. He was real and lived in a mall for most of his life. He compared the size of his domain in the video to the size of his domain in the novel. We also talked a bit about what he had in his domains and what we think he should have to be a happier gorilla. To end the morning we started doing a drawing of Ivan in our visual journals. Tomorrow we will continue, and add to this drawing.

Following lunch we joined the other grade 2 classes for Health. We are starting a unit on healthy eating habits and the 4 food groups. To start the unit we brainstormed what we thought healthy eating means or is. A few ideas we came up with were:
-eating fruits and vegetables
-drink lots and lots of water
-if you eat healthy you will grow taller
-drinking milk helps you to grow big and strong
Then we listened to a story on the internet called Gregory the Terrible Eater. Following the story we made a list of healthy eating habits and non-healthy eating habits.
-healthy habits: eat the rainbow - the four food groups, having a small treat once and a while,
-non-healthy habits: eating candy every day, try not to be a picky goat eater

Then we had music. To end the day, we did another health activity. We had to create a healthy alphabet. It was challenging to come up with healthy foods that start with each letter!

Reminders:
-Return library books
-Please sign up for the conferences on Thursday and Friday
-No School for students on Friday
-Book fair starts tomorrow

Thursday, 26 November 2015

Thursday, November 26, 2015

Today was a good, hard working day. We even earned a big marble!

Tomorrow is our word wall quiz! So to practice our words today we completed a fill in the blank page. Then, after Phys. Ed. Mrs. Coker joined us and we played word wall Bingo. She also started reading us a story until Mrs. G. came back.
Here are our word wall words one last time before the quiz tomorrow.
Group A: top, stop, men, hen, pen, fix, mix, six, fox, box
Group B: place, make, making, help, here, want, nice, to, two, into

After recess, for math, we did measurement. Last week we measured our own footprint using both standard and non-standard units of measurement. Today, we learned how big an actual foot is. First we measured how many centimeters our foot was, then we predicted how many centimeters we thought a foot was, then we learned that it was 30 cm! For an activity tomorrow, we each needed to measure out a piece of paper that was exactly 1 square foot. We were given a piece of chart paper and with a partner, measured and cut out 1 square foot using rulers. Tomorrow afternoon we will be getting together with the other Grade 2 classes to do an activity with our squares.

Following lunch we had music. We are almost all ready for the winter celebration!

After music, we did Social Studies. At this time we had a chance to finish our reflection on the 6 land regions in Alberta in our visual journals.

Following a quick yoga, body break, we finished the day with doing more research on elephants. We only have a few more days to do this research before we use in for other, upcoming, fun activities. If we want, we can do some extra research at home and bring it to school.

Reminders:
-Monday is the last day to vote for the worst mustache between Mr. Hebert, Mr. Sadowsky, and Mr. Shackleton
-Booking for conferences next week is now open online

Wednesday, 25 November 2015

Wednesday, November 25, 2015

We practiced our word wall words by choosing an activity like straws, whiteboards, popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners, pom poms, buttons, and so on. Friday is our quiz.

In Phys. Ed. we played a game where we had to pass the ball to other people on our team. The goal was to get all of our team on the mat. There were four different teams going to four different mats.

We also, did some more work with our creative writing, keeping in mind what good writing looks like.

After recess, we did some more research on elephants. A few things we learned were:
-they eat leaves, flowers, and fruits
-adult elephants teach baby elephants to communicate with other elephants by using their ears and trunks
-when something is trying to hurt the baby, the older elephants surround it in a circle to protect the baby
-elephants can live in Africa

We talked more about Alberta and the 6 regions. We watched a video of each region and learned a few more things. Ask me what I learned about each region. The regions are: Canadian Shield, Parklands, Rocky Mountains, Grasslands, Foothills, Boreal Forest.

We are continuing to work on the Pillars of Care, especially caring for others, caring for learning, and caring for place. Ask me how I am doing with each of these.

Reminders:
-December Book Orders due tomorrow
-Fun Lunch tomorrow, bring a snack and extra lunch if you like
-Clothing order form due Monday

Tuesday, 24 November 2015

Tuesday, November 24, 2015

Today was a quiet day. Hope everyone is being safe on the roads and sidewalks and keeping warm.

This morning, after Daily 5, to practice our word wall words we brainstormed a list of all the ways we could practice them. Then, we each got to choose a way and practice, if we wanted to we could also switch activities. Some of the ways to practice were - whiteboard, pipe cleaners, popsicle sticks, fancy letters, straws, pyramid writing, and more. Ask me how I practiced my words today!

In Phys Ed we played a fun game to practice out throwing and catching skills. There were four teams and we had to work together, with our team, to get everyone on the mat. It ended up in a tie between 2 teams!

After Phys Ed we continued our creative writing. It has been a while since we have worked on this kind of writing, so it was good to continue it. First we reviewed what creative writing is and what good writing looks like. We will keep these ideas in mind as we continue on with our creative story writing.
Creative writing is: making up a story from a picture, something that is made up, using your imagination when writing, might be sad, happy, silly or funny
Good writing looks like: neat and nice printing, using periods at the end of sentences, capitols at the start of sentences, spaces between words, using long/full sentences, detail (who, what, where, when, why, and how)

Following recess we had library. We still need to work on remembering to bring our books back so that we can sign out a new one. Until we show responsibility for taking care of the books and bringing them back on time, we cannot take out 2 books. Library is every Tuesday.

After library, we took some time to read more of our novel, The One and only Ivan.

This afternoon, following music, we did Social Studies. Yesterday we talked about 3 out 6 regions in Alberta. We reviewed them quickly before learning about the other 3 regions. The regions we learned about today were, Parkland, Boreal Forest, and Canadian Shield. Ask me 2 things that I learned about each region.

To end the day, we had a body break and wrote/drew information about the 3 regions we learned today in our visual journals.

Dress warm!

Reminders:
-Please wear weather appropriate clothing everyday
-Book Orders due Thursday
-Fun lunch Thursday
-Please complete home reading every night and return the next day

Monday, 23 November 2015

Monday, November 23, 2015

Welcome back, hope you enjoyed your long weekend.

This morning, after Daily 5, we looked at our new word wall words. We noticed that there are many word families and other similarities within the 2 lists. The word families are - ix, en, op, and ox. There are also 2 words, from group b, that sound the same but have different spellings and meanings, ask me to point out which 2 words they are.
Next week marks another 10 weeks of words learned, so that means we will be studying 50 words again.
Below are the words for this week.
Group A: top, stop, men, hen, pen, fix, mix, six, fox, box
Group B: place, make, making, help, here, want, nice, to, two, into

After Phys Ed Ms. Coker was with us. With her we finished up writing sentences using our word wall words, then she read us a story.

For the last hour of the morning we did research on elephants! We got to choose whether or not we wanted to work with a partner. There were also 2 different papers with specific questions dictating what information we needed to find about elephants. Half of us got to work on the Ipad while the other half looked through books. Don't worry, we will all get a chance with the Ipads and books.
Ask me why we are doing research on elephants...

Following lunch we had time to read to ourselves. Mrs. G. noticed that some of us are doing extra work and reading the books on elephants.

We are continuing to learn about the prairies in Social Studies. So far, we have learned about the prairie province of Manitoba and Saskatchewan, today, we started to focus on our very own province, Alberta!
So far, we have learned that Alberta has 6 different land regions across it. Today, we focused on 3 of the 6 regions they were the Grasslands, Rocky Mountains, and Foothills. Ask we to tell you 2 pieces of information about each region!

Reminders:
-Library tomorrow, please bring back books to get a new one!
-Dental forms due Wednesday
-Book Orders due Thursday
-Fun Lunch on Thursday
-Only a week and a half left to donate to mens health awareness and vote for the worst mustache. Competition between Mr. Hebert, Mr. Sadawski, and Mr. Shackleton

Thursday, 19 November 2015

Thursday, November 19, 2015

We had a really good day today.

Before Phys Ed, this morning, we had Daily 5 and time to practice our word wall words before the quiz. Today we switched duties, half of us practiced on white boards while the other half build the words with pipe cleaners.
Then after Phys. Ed we did our quiz. Everyone did very well being that the words are getting more and more difficult.

In math we did some more measuring with our foot prints. We had to measure using all 4 non-standard unit (markers, popsicle sticks, cards, and pom poms). Then we had to measure how many cm it was, ask me how big my foot is in cms!

After lunch we learned all about Saskatchewan. We got to see some pretty pictures of the land and the many animals that live there too. A few things we learned are:
-the provincial flower is called the Western Read Lily
-They grow lots and lots of wheat
-There are grain elevators there
-They have land called the badlands
Ask me what else I learned about Saskatchewan!

Mr. Rattan said that we are ready to go for our Winter Celebration. Only a few more practices to go until we present to all of you!

To end the day, we did an activity in our visual journals. Just like Manitoba, we had to pick 5 things about Saskatchewan, write them in our book and draw a picture to go with it.

Enjoy your long weekend!

Reminders:
-No School tomorrow
-Dental form coming home today
-Library on Tuesday, be sure to return your books
-Movember fundraiser until the end of the month

Wednesday, 18 November 2015

Wednesday, November 18, 2015

This morning we did something different to practice our word wall words. Half of us practiced them using white boards and dry erase markers while the other half built the words with pipe cleaners. Tomorrow we are going to do the same thing but switching activities. This will be good practice before our word wall quiz which is also tomorrow.
Here are our words again to practice at home tonight:
Group A: pet, get, let, fed, red, did, pan, had, fun, tub
Group B: some, come, home, fun, funny, run, running, ran, us, use

After Phys Ed we set literacy goals that Mrs. G will be adding to our learning plans. Ask me what goal I chose and what I feel I need to improve on (I'll give you a hint, it is either reading or writing skills).

Following recess we did a math activity that related to our novel study. We learned the Ivan, the gorilla lives in a cage that is 40x40 feet big. We started measuring it out by using our own feet. First, we traced our foot on a piece of paper. Then we measure it using non-standard units of measurement. Later, we will be converting the non-standard to standard units.

We learned about Manitoba prairies. A few things we learned are:
-the provincial tree is the white spruce
-some animals from Manitoba are polar bear, fox, white tailed deer, and wolves
-one of the biggest lakes in the world, it is call Lake Winnipeg
-crops they grow are wheat, barley, flax, and oats

At the very end of the day we had a meeting with the other Grade 2s. We had received a letter from Mr. Willy Wonka. The letter was about our magnetic machines that we created. He had taken ideas from each of our machines and put them together to make one magnificent machine for his factory. Mr. Willy Wonka said we did such a great job, he sent us a little treat to all the people that sent a letter to him.

Tuesday, November 17, 2015

Today was a busy day. We finally got the IPads working, so those are now apart of Daily 5. They will be used for listen to reading on RazKids and word work.

Our word wall quiz is coming up soon, so as practice today, on our own, we had to find or come up with 5 words for each word family. The word families we worked with were; et, ed, un, and an.

After recess we had library. In the library there is a big white board the says "No Bullying". It is bully awareness week so everyone from the school is adding their thoughts and ideas on what bullying is and what we can do or say when we see a bully. As a class we had a discussion around these ideas and added our thoughts to the board too. Then we went and looked at books, some of us chose new books, from the library shelves.

Right after lunch we had music. It was a lot of fun, so don't forget to ask me what we did.

Following music we did math and ketchups. Some of us have gotten pretty far behind on some work and before we can move on, we need to finish it and get caught up.

Tomorrow we will be starting a new project that will go along with our new novel study. Did I tell you what the book is called already? If not, ask me! And what it has been about so far. It is a lovely book so far.

Reminders:
-Picture retakes are tomorrow, November 18th.  Students are asked to bring their original proof sheets to the camera if possible, so that the photographer can then see how to improve the photos for the students.  We will also do photos of any students who didn’t have their pictures taken on original photo day.
-Fun lunch forms and money due tomorrow
-Movember fundraiser going on until the end of the month

Monday, November 16, 2015

Welcome back. We have another short week this week, as there is no school for students on Friday.

This morning, after our usual morning meeting and Daily 5 time, we looked at our new word wall words for this week. We noticed that all of group a's words have a short vowel sound, also there are a number of word families in both groups; "et", "an", "un", and "ed". After we wrote our words on a piece of paper to bring home to practice for the week, we had to use them in sentences. A little challenge with our sentences this week though, we need to have 5 or more words per sentence and use 2 word wall words in each sentence. Ask me to give you a few examples as practice.
Word Wall Words:
Group A: pet, get, let, fed, red, did, pan, had, fun, tub
Group B: some, come, home, fun, funny, run, running, ran, us, use

Ask me what we did in Phys. Ed. today (it was a lot of fun!).

After recess we finished reading a Dr. Suess book we started right before recess. Then we went into some more problem solving with the days of the week and months of the year. We spent a little more time together, practicing and reviewing before going into our assignment.

Following lunch, we read to ourselves then did social studies. In social, we finished working on our community page in our white visual journals. Together we brainstormed all the things we could think of that represent Canada, Alberta, Calgary, and Beddington.

We ended the day with a quick dancing body break and read more of our new novel, The One and Only Ivan.

Reminders:
-Library tomorrow. Please bring back books to sign out a new one.
-Please complete home reading tonight and return to school tomorrow
-We are still fundraising for Movember. $1.00 per vote.

Friday, November 13, 2015

Happy Friday!

Today was a pretty busy day. After Daily 5 we had our Word Wall Quiz. Mrs. G can tell we have been working hard and practicing our words, it shows in our everyday writing too.

After Phys. Ed. we started our new novel study. Mrs. G read to us a short description about the book, then we had a short discussion on how we were feeling about the characters in the story and what we thought the story was going to be about. A few of the feeling we had were:

-sad because the gorilla is in a cage
-sad because the gorilla might start thinking about his home in the jungle
-sad because humans took him away from his home and father
-sad because he was taken from his family and happy because he likes living in the mall
-happy because he has friends he gets along with
Ask me what the story is about so far and to explain why we had these feelings so early in the story.

In math, we did problem solving. First, we quickly reviewed the days of the week and months of the year. Then, we went through the 5 problem solving questions together and finished by answering the questions independently. We will be doing a lot more work around problem solving next week. Today was a really good intro into what problem solving questions are and how we can answer them.

Right after lunch we had music, we did much better today with Mr Rattan! When we got back to class, we started to review prairie communities and the map we did yesterday, then, we had another fire drill! Luckily we were not outside for very long today. Our class does a fantastic job during these drills.

When we finally came back inside, we finished labeling our prairie provinces. Ask me what we labeled on our maps.

Reminders:
-Picture retakes are Wednesday
-Movember competition/fundraiser is still going on. Our school goal is to raise $300.00 by the end of the month. You are more then welcome to vote as many times as you like for $1.00 per vote.
-There will be no school for the kids on Friday.

Thursday, November 12, 2015

Welcome back from your midweek break. What an interesting day we had.

During Daily 5 the fire alarm went off! It was a bit chilly out but we all followed the routine perfectly. When we came back inside, we finished up our Daily 5 activities then went right to Phys. Ed.
In Phys. Ed. today we practiced our throwing and catching skills with volleyballs and we also played wax museum.

After Phys. Ed. Ms. Coker joined us while we worked on a "Find the Mistake" worksheet. There were 10 sentences, each had one of our word wall words in it, but not all of the words were spelt correctly. We had to figure out which words were spelt incorrectly then write them correctly beside the sentence. This was great practice for our reading and grammar skills.
*Reminder, tomorrow is the word wall quiz. Here are our words to practice tonight:

Group A: not, on, dog, got, the, dig, at, in, can, to
Group B: the, that, them, day, may, made, was, of, it, a

Following recess, we completed a graph worksheet in Math. One graph was building a bar graph and the other was a pictograph. Then, there were 3-5 questions about each graph we had to answer. Tomorrow we are going to do some problem solving.

All afternoon we did Social Studies. First, we had a chance to finish drawing and assessing our bedroom maps. Then, after a quick body break, we continued on.
We just started a unit on prairie communities in Canada, we will be focusing on the prairie community we live in, however, today we started by discussing all the prairie communities in Canada. *Ask me which 3 provinces are the prairie provinces and what we did with a map of Canada??

Reminders:
-Home reading tonight. This will be only night for this half of the week. please return to school tomorrow for the weekend.
-School picture retakes are Wednesday, the 18th.
-Still taking mustache votes until the end of the month. $1.00 per vote, vote as many times as you like. All donations going to mens health awareness and research foundations.

Tuesday, November 10, 2015

This morning we had to complete a few house keeping items before starting our morning routine and Daily 5.
After Daily 5, we did some work with our word wall words. In our language arts books, we made different lists of words. Together we brainstormed as many words as we could think of that are apart of the "ot" family, the "ay" family, and then all the words that start with "th". Take a look at some of the words we wrote down, and ask me to tell you more:
"ot" family - got, not, hot, spot, shot, dot
"ay" family - may, day, say, ray, clay, yay, stray, pray
"th" words - three, thinking, then, this, throat, Thursday, there, them

Right after recess was our school wide Remembrance Day Assembly. The division students put it on and boy, did they do a fantastic job! Ask me what I think peace means and how I will strive for peace in our community.

After lunch we had some time to read to ourselves again, then we went to the library (because the time we normally go, we had the assembly). Then, we went right to music. In music we sang a new song called "Cleaning the Halls"and the Rocky Mountain song.

To end the we did some work with our bedroom maps. If we did not bring a bedroom map back from home, Mrs. G gave us time to create the map in class. Once we were done, we had to do a self assessment on our own map. There was a checklist we had to fill out based on all things on our map, then 2 questions to answer. One was about what we thought we did well on our map, and the other was what we could have done better on our map. Finally, we gave ourselves a mark out of 8 and explained why we deserved that mark.

Reminders:
-No school tomorrow. There is school Thursday and Friday, so make sure you come back!
-No home reading tonight, it will go home again on Thursday, one last time before the weekend.
-Mavricks Club will be collecting food donation until Friday.
-vote for the worst mustache between Mr. Hebert, Mr, Sadowsky, and Mr. Shackelton $1.00 per vote, you can vote as many times as you like.

Monday, November 9, 2015

Welcome back to this snowy day. Hope you all enjoyed your weekend.

This morning we got to do Daily 5 again. Right after that, we read and discussed our new word wall words. This week there are a few red words, words with a bossy e, and words that start with the same sound and have the same vowel sound in them. We had to put our words into sentences that had 5 or more words in it. I also wrote down the words on a piece of paper which I will be binging home today. Just in case I lose them or cant find them, here are the words:

Group A: not, on, dog, got, the, dig, at, in, can, to
Group B: the, that, them, day, may, made, was, at, it, a

After recess, we had math and we did something new today. We focused on the days of the week and started talking about the months of the year. Here are some things we did with the days of the week:
-how many days are in one week
-Sunday is the first day of the week
-Saturday is the last day of the week
-it is a repeating pattern that goes on forever and ever
-we practiced counting which day comes when, based on Mrs. G's question (for example, which day comes 3 days after Thursday?)
-we listened to and sang along with a song
As for months in a year, we know that January always comes first and December is always the last month. Also that there are 12 months in a year that also repeat over and over again forever.

After lunch we read to ourselves for 15 minutes. It was a nice time to cool down and practice our reading skills. Then we got a chance to finish some math before going into social studies. Whoever did not finish the Math worksheet is bringing it home tonight for homework..

For social studies we talked about our bedroom maps. I need to bring to school tomorrow if I didn't today. The things that my bedroom map needs to have on it is:
-pictures
-name
-title
-date
-legend/key
-symbols
Following that discussion, we did a KWL chart on the prairies. Some of the things we said we already knew are:
-farms
-tools
-grasslands
-horses
-oil
-pipes
-pumpjacks
-moose/deer
And, some of the questions we have about the prairies are:
-what kinds of wild and domestic animals are there?
-How many people liver here?
-What did people do in the past on the prairies?
-What makes the prairies unique?
-What is family life like in the prairies?

A few of the male teachers in the school are having a Movember competition. Mr. Hebert, Mr. Sadowsky, and Mr. Shackleton are having a competition of who has the worst mustache. Starting now, anyone in the school can vote. It costs $1.00 per vote. You can vote as many times as you like. The person with the most votes will win some sort of pre-determined prize at the end of the month. The class that raises the most money will get to choose an outfit for the teacher with the worst mustache to wear for an entire day. If you wish to vote please bring $1.00. Mrs. G will hold on to the money and keep track of all votes until the end of the month. All money raised will go to mens health awareness and research foundations.

The Mavricks are still asking for your help in donating food for our troops and those in need. You can bring any food item that will not go bad, like a can of soup or some pasta. Tomorrow is the last day to bring food items.

Also, if you have any old winter gear that maybe does not fit anymore or you just have not used, you can donate those items as well. They will be sent out to children of all ages who cannot afford to buy new winter gear.

Beddington Heights thanks you all for your support as we do these fundraisers for our community.

Reminders:
-Home reading. Please, please complete and return to school tomorrow
-Practice those word wall words
-Fun lunch form coming home today, they are due back next Wednesday, at the latest
-There is no school on Wednesday!

Thursday, 5 November 2015

Thursday, November 5, 2015

Today was a normal day again, finally.

Tomorrow we have our word wall quiz! So I need to make sure to practice my words tonight so I can ace the quiz. Here are our words again:
Group A: his, dig, pat, sun, put, is, big, men, cam, am
Group B: no, go, going, most, kind, find, gave, so, do, doing
Today, at school, to practice our words, we had to complete a worksheet with fill in the blanks and scrambled words.
We then went in to our creative writing. We took a few minutes, again, to look at the picture and come up with ideas in our own heads of what we could write, then we went right into continuing our writing.

After recess we had Phys. Ed with the rest of the Grade 2s! It was so nice to be with them again, although we had fun with the Grade 1s. Ask me about the game we played.

In math, we continued working with graphs. Today, we learned all about how to read and answer questions about graphs properly. We also learned about a few different kinds of graphs, including; bar graphs, picture graphs, line graphs, and plot/dot graphs. Soon we will be making one of each all on our own.

Following lunch we had some time to read to our self from the books in our classroom or our library book if we brought it to school.

Then we did a pre activity for our next novel study. Mrs. G did not tell us the title of the book, instead she showed us four different pictures, one at a time. In our visual journals, we had to write down 3-5 things that first popped into our heads when we say the pictures. Ask we what the pictures are and what I think the novel will be about...!

To end the day, we started a social studies unit on communities. First, we reviewed what we discussed back in September on what we already knew about communities. Then, in our visual journals, we divided the page into four sections. We titled each section; Canada, Alberta, Calgary, and Beddington. Under each title, we had to draw a picture or write 3-5 things that represent each community.

Reminders:
-Please complete and return all home reading materials to school tomorrow!
-School picture orders due tomorrow
-Word wall quiz tomorrow

Wednesday, 4 November 2015

Wednesday, November 4, 2015

This morning we did a lot of writing. First we finished up our word wall tasks from yesterday and Monday. Then we started to do a little creative writing. Mrs. G showed us a picture that we just sat and looked at for one minute. Before we could start the writing we had to ask ourselves question about the picture like;
-Who are they?
-What are they doing?
-What are they wearing?
-Why are they dressed that way?
-How might they be feeling?
-How old might they be?
-Where are they?
We continued this writing piece at the end of the day. Ask about the picture and what I am going to write!

Before recess, we were able to squeeze in some library time. It was nice to roam the books and practice our reading skills.

After recess we had Phys Ed, for the last time, with the Grade 1s. Today, we did a "you pick"; 2 kids chose an activity to play and the class voted on it. We played volleyball! It was a lot of fun because we only had 3 people on a team, so we had more chances to try and hit the ball over the net.

Right after lunch we had music. Altogether we made up our own class song and practiced a song we have been singing for a while.

Following music, we went right into graphing. First, Mrs. G showed us what the graphs should look like using data that has already been collected. Then, we got to make our own graph with the data we collected yesterday. A few things our graphs needed to include are:
-a title
-numbers along the side
-a title for the numbers along the side
-a title along the bottom
-what we collected along the bottom
-the date
-add the data we collected
If you have any questions, ask me! We all did a fantastic job on our individual graphs.

Reminders:
-Home Reading - please complete and return to school tomorrow
-Book Orders are due tomorrow
-School picture orders are due Friday
-Bring a food item to support our troops and those in need. Bring by Tuesday the 10th

Tuesday, 3 November 2015

Tuesday, November 3, 2015

Today we did our usual morning meeting and Daily 5. After Daily 5, we went right into practicing our word wall words. We had to write our words a few different ways; using bubble letters, fancy letters, dots, and then we got to choose one other way to write our words, whether it was rainbow write, pyramid, or anything else. Ask me to show you what these forms of writing look like.

Following Phys. Ed. and lunch we did some more work with graphs. Before lunch, we looked at 2 different kinds of graphs and made a list of all the features it had. This will help us to make sure we include all the right features in our own graphs. Then, after lunch, we starting collecting and measuring data. Tomorrow, we will take our data and start creating our own graphs!

To end the day, we continued and completed our poppy wreath for the Remembrance Day assembly next week.

The Marvricks club is accepting non-perishable food items as donations to support our troops and those in need as come up on November 11. Their goal is get enough to line up along all the hallways in the school, both upstairs and downstairs. If you wish to help out, please send items with your child. Thanks!

Reminders:
-Home Reading
-Book Orders are due Thursday
-School Picture orders are due Friday
-Please return library books
-Note coming home from Parent Council today

Monday, November 2, 2015

Welcome back! Hope you all enjoyed your long weekend and enjoyed your Halloween on Saturday, if you celebrated.

Today we did some sentence writing with our new word wall words. Being that we have all already improved so much on our writing, since the beginning of the school year, we were expected to use our word wall word in a sentence that had 5 or more words in it. This also allows us to be more creative with our writing.
Our new words are as follows, please practice with me at home too:

Group A       Group B
his                   no
dig                  go
pat                going
sun                must
put                kind
is                   find
big                gave
men                so
cat                 do
am              doing

In Phys. Ed. today, we did stations again. There were 5 different stations, a couple of them were new. Ask me what equipment I played with today.

Remember when I told you we starting measuring data last week and we talked a bit about graphs? Well today, we actually did some graphing practice together. As we were doing a graph on colors, we noticed that an increasing pattern appeared! Interesting how math concepts are connected to each other.

After lunch we watched a couple videos about Remembrance Day. We know that this day is coming up, next week, on Wednesday November 11. Before watching the videos, we shared some ideas of what we already knew about the special day. Then we watched two videos, one on the history of the battle field, and the other on the history of poppies. After the videos we shared a few things that we learned and discussed where the money from the poppies go. Following music, we started making a poppy wreath for our Remembrance Day assembly that will be next week.

Reminders:
-Please complete the home ready and return tomorrow. I thank you all for your cooperation as we do this program in our class.
-Class pictures coming home today.
-Picture re-take day is Wednesday, November 18

Thursday, 29 October 2015

Thursday, October 29, 2015

Happy long weekend.

Remember there is no school tomorrow.

Today we had our word wall quiz. Everyone did very, very well. :) Mrs. G made us a copy of our 50 word, word wall quiz from last week that we get to bring home. Take a look at how I did!

After our word wall quiz, we joined the other Grade 2 classes and watched the new movie of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Hopefully we can get a chance to finish it next week.

At 10:00 we had an assembly for Mrs Rassmassan because she is retiring. Today was her last day with us at Beddington. Hopefully she will come and visit.

Reminders:
-Halloween Dance tonight at 6:00pm
-Pictures coming home today. Keep on the look out for retake day.
-November calendar coming today.
-Book orders are coming home today, they are due next Thursday, November 5.

Have a Happy Halloween

Wednesday, 28 October 2015

Wednesday, October 28, 2015

Today, after Daily 5, we had to sort our word wall words into two groups: short vowel sounds and long vowel sounds. Tomorrow is our word wall quiz! Here are our words again to practice tonight:

Group A       Group B
-pup               -be
-bus                -see
-but                -got
-tub                -she
-I                   -sheep
-up                -shop
-us                -queen
-run               -green
-fun               -bee
-to                 -he

In phys ed we did stations, but we got to go anywhere we wanted to and switch whenever we wanted after making sure we cleaned up the equipment we were using.

It was fun lunch today, Yummm!

After lunch we got a chance to look at some books from our classroom library. Then we had a conversation about the pillars of care, What are we doing well and what we can continue to work on. It was a nice reminder for everyone before the long weekend.

In math, we started to learn about data and what a graph is. A graph is gathering information (or data), measuring it, and then organizing it.

To end the day, because we worked pretty hard on our school work, Mrs. G gave us 5 minutes of free time. Ask me what I did.

Reminders:
-Home Reading! Please complete and return to school. No home reading will be going home tomorrow because it is the start of the weekend.
-Wear orange and/or black to school tomorrow
-Halloween Dance tomorrow evening from 6:00-8:00pm in the gymnasium
-Early dismissal at 11:00am tomorrow
-No school Friday

Tuesday, 27 October 2015

Tuesday, October 27, 2015

Today, after our morning meeting and Daily 5, we played Word Wall Bingo. We were given three attempts to get a bingo; the first time by getting one row, the second time by getting two rows, and the third time by getting a full blackout. Games like that are always a fun way to review and practice our words.

We also did a couple Halloween activities today; one writing and one art. The writing piece was titles "Halloween is Coming" and altogether we brainstormed six ideas that we could write about. We were all pretty excited to do this writing; ask me what I wrote!
Once we completed our writing, we got to do an art activity, extending our learning of shapes and patterns in math. Each of us got our own outline of a pumpkin that was divided up by lines. In each section of the pumpkin we had to create a design using shapes or patterns. It did not matter what colors or shapes or patterns we used, but every section had to be different. They are looking pretty cool!

After lunch we had music. You will have to ask what we did with Mr. Rattan.

Also, this afternoon we had science. We did a review of magnets yesterday, discussing everything we already knew, what to know, and what we learned throughout the unit. So today, we started doing a final assessment for the unit. Mrs. G gave us a lot of time to work slow and hard making sure we answer all the questions, the best we can.

Reminders:
-Home Reading - please complete, sign, and return to school everyday!
-Fun lunch tomorrow - if you did not return the envelope and money, please remember to still bring a lunch from home
-Early dismissal on Thursday at 11:00am
-No school Friday
-Halloween Dance Thursday evening from 6:00-8:00

Monday, 26 October 2015

Monday, October 26, 2015

Welcome back to another short week.

This morning, after our morning meeting and Daily 5, we looked at our new word wall words. Lucky for us, we are back down to 10 words a week for a few weeks. Our words are:

Group A:      Group B:
-pup               -be
-bus               -see
-but                -got
-tub               -she
-I                   -sheep
-up                -shop
-us                 -queen
-run               -green
-fun               -bee
-to                 -he

We have written down our list of words and will be bringing them home today to study for the week. We also had to be extra creative today by putting each word in a sentence that had 5 or more words.

Right after recess we had Phys Ed. Since the rest of the Grade 2s are doing swimming lessons right now, we had Phys Ed with the Grade 1s. We helped them practice their throwing skills and ended the class with a game of dodgeball.

Our math unit of measurement and science unit of magnets is coming to a close. Before we start the post assessment for our magnets unit, we added to the last, L, section of our KWL chart. This was everything that we have learned throughout our unit. Here are a things we came up with:
-magnets seek attraction
-magnets can stick to each other with something weak in the middle of two
-if they stay attracted to something for a long time, they weaken
-we use magnets all different ways every day

In Math, we reviewed what we already knew about measurement. We really had to guide Mrs. G with using a ruler properly. A few other units of measurement we discussed were, weight, time, and capacity.

Reminders:
-Everyone has home reading to do tonight. Please complete, sign, and return to school tomorrow.
-Black and Orange day on Thursday. Wear orange or black, Halloween costumes are not allowed.
-Early dismissal on Thursday. No school on Friday.
-Library tomorrow, please return all library books.

Thursday, 22 October 2015

Thursday, October 22, 2015

This morning we got extra time for our Daily 5 time because Mrs. G was doing reading with everyone. It was a nice time to read to friend, play word games, or do another activity.

After Daily 5 we went right to Phys. Ed. We are practicing our throwing skills and making sure we are throwing with the right hand and stepping forward with the correct foot.

Following Phys Ed Mrs. Coker was with us and we played word wall bingo! She also read us some funny Halloween stories.

After lunch we worked really hard on our letter to Mr. Willy Wonka. Almost all of us are on the good copy. To end off the day, we finished reading the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Tomorrow afternoon, while Mrs. G is at Safety Patrol Training, we will be getting together with the other Grade 2s to complete an activity to wrap up the novel study.

Tomorrow is the 50 word quiz! Practice, practice, practice. If you need them again, the words are listed below:

Home Reading: Please complete and return all home reading materials to school tomorrow. I will not be sending home reading home for the weekend but I would like all of it to be at school. This will help me to keep track of all the items. Thank you for your cooperation.

Today was another beautiful Fall day!

This morning, following Daily 5, we did a new activity with our word wall words. We had to try to sort our words as many different ways as possible. For each sorting rule, it was not an expectation to use every single word. Ask me about the ways I sorted our words and together, lets see if we can come up with a few more rules!

After recess, we had math, and today we did some work around representing numbers. This lesson was a continuation on what we were doing with the artist, Mrs. Stables. Together, we thought of 9 different ways to represent a number. They were:
-write the numeral
-use objects and draw a picture
-use ten frames
-tally marks
-addition
-subtraction
-groups
-place value
-draw and label on a number line
Once we did a couple examples together, we had to do 5 on our own. Mrs. G gave us 3 numbers then we got to choose the next 2. We did not have to use every single strategy to show each number, but we did have to use 3.

Right after lunch we had science. Everyone has now had a chance to test their magnetic machine and write a reflection as to what happened. Now, to finish up our project, we are all writing a letter to Mr. Wonka about our machine and why he should pick ours. Ms. Binks, Mr. Fisher, and Mrs. G hope to send our letters to Mr. Wonka next week. Hopefully we will hear back from him!

Thank you for completing the home reading each night and sending it back. Every morning I take time to have the students read the book to me as well, before I give them a sticker. If I feel a students needs more practice with a book, I will send it home again in a week or so to try again. I will also adjust the level of book accordingly, if necessary. I really appreciate your cooperation in taking the time to read with you child every night.

Reminders:
-Swimming ribbons coming home today
-Home reading tonight. Please read the book, sign the log, and return to school tomorrow.
