Welcome Back!
Hello everyone and welcome back. I hope everyone had a fantastic Spring Break!
Unfortunately I (Mrs. G) will be away all week as my Grandma has passed away. Therefore I will be back in Saskatchewan, spending time with my family.
It will still be a busy week with the substitute teacher. We will welcome the substitute into our classroom for the week and continue to demonstrate the 4 Pillars of Care; Care for Self, Care for Others, Care for Learning, and Care for Place.
There will be no home reading sent home this week.
April book orders will come home Friday or next Monday.
If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact the other grade 2 teachers, Ms. Holly Zimmerman and Mr. Lyndon Fisher, our curtain partners Mrs. Michelle Nelson, or the main office.
This week at school:
-ELA - word wall words, Spring Break Recount
-Math - place value and number sense review
-Social Studies - Nunavut inquires
-Science - hot and cold/liquids experiments
-Art - spring has sprung - pastels, paint, shades, blending
-Health - Pillars of Care
Reminders:

Short Week
Spring is in the air! This week is a short week due to conferences. Thursday is a half day and no school for kids on Friday.
Our word wall words for this week are:
Group A: went, sent, ant, bend, find, mind, kind, want, day, may
Group B: more, store, stand, star, blew, flew, new, stone, sting, ring
Group C: have, give, love, from, live, friend, much, such, old, told
We had a Jump Rope for Heart kickoff assembly this morning. Some people from the Heart and Stroke foundation came to talk to us about what the initiative is to raise money and show us some cool tricks we can do while skipping as well as cool prizes we can win for raising money. We are all bringing home forms today. The foundation asks that we only ask close family and friends for pledges and to NOT go door to door.
This afternoon we had music. Everyone is doing a fantastic job of returning their recorders for the next music class. Our next music class will be Wednesday.
For the remainder of the afternoon we practiced our place value skills. We brainstormed that we practice place value to:
-know our numbers better
-learn how to add/subtract
-learn how to eventually multiply and divide
-for using money and measuring
At our desks, Mrs. G would write a number on the board from 0-999 and we would build it using place value blocks. We even got a chance to build our own number and share with Mrs. G what it was.
This week at school:
-ELA: word wall words, writing good sentences, home reading
-Social Studies: Lets Visit Nunavut - inuksuks, weather
-Science: weather science experiment
-Health: pillars of care, especially care for learning and care for others
-Math: place value from 0-999
Reminders:
-Jump rope for heart forms coming home today
-Book your conferences with Mrs. G if you haven't already
-Half day Thursday
-No school Friday
-Book fair tomorrow-Friday
-Library tomorrow, please return all books!

Fun Friday!
What a beautiful Friday it was!
We have started off our morning meetings with some movement; either dancing or some kind of exercise. This seems to be helping with focusing during our morning meeting.
Before our word wall quiz we played Word Wall Bingo! A couple weeks after the Spring Break we will be back to 50 words..
This afternoon was spent doing social and some math. After we read to ourselves, we went outside on a rock hunt. This really helped some of us who did not already bring rocks and some of us who did already bring rocks, we found more we could use.

Before we actually built our inusuks, we had to practice laying out the rocks on our desks and drawing the plan in our Lets Visit Nunavut journals.

Then a few of us got to build them! The rest will get a chance on Monday to build theirs. Don't they look so cool!!

During fun activities, like this afternoon, we are still working on being patient and calm and working quietly in our own space. It wouldn't be so great if we weren't able to do these activities if our behavior gets too silly. Ask me how I am doing with this and what I can do to improve or help others too!
Reminders:
-Conferences next week. Please book a time, Mrs. G would love to have you in to discuss the progress and accomplishments of each and every one of us.
Everyone have a fantastic weekend and enjoy the weather!

Wiggle Wednesday
Wiggle Wednesday it was. Good thing for recess, lunch, and body breaks throughout the day.
To practice our word wall words today we played hangman with a partner.
Ms. Cokar was with us again today. We did some brainstorming on being healthy and did a journal entry on our ideas.
With Mrs. Nelson's Grade 1s, we broke into small groups to rehearse and present a poem. Take a look at the photos below. There are some groups that will present tomorrow, but the ones that went today were well done!

Go on a Rock Hunt
What nice weather we have been having! We do still need to be wearing appropriate clothing, you never know when the weather is going to change. Also, separate indoor and outdoor shoes are a requirement. Please help us to continue to follow this school rule.
Today we got to choose how to practice our word wall words. A few of us have homework tonight with our words. Please check with me and see if I am one of them.
After recess we had library. We are doing really well at bringing out books back and choosing new ones quietly in the library. Mrs. G read us a book all about hugs; bear hug, brother and sister hugs, octopus hugs, and I Love You hugs. Let me show you my favorite kind of hug!
This afternoon we continued graphing. Tomorrow will be the absolutely last day to finish this activity because it is time to move on.
We also had music. We are doing so well on the recorders! Tomorrow we will be bringing them home to practice, BUT, we do still need to remember to bring them back to school on music days, which is alternating days. Our next music day will be Thursday.
Rock Hunt
We have started a science unit on Hot and Cold. We will be connecting this unit to a social studies unit on the Arctic. If and when you have time, please go on a hunt for rocks. A small sandwich bag full will be plenty. Collect rocks of all shapes and sizes, but overall keep them on the smaller side. We will be using these rocks to build a traditional Arctic structure. If these rocks to could be at school by Thursday that would be greatly appreciated.
Reminders:
-Home Reading: complete and return daily
-Go on a rock hunt

Happy Monday!
Hope everyone had a great weekend.
Our word wall words for this week are:
Group A: late, gave, cone, line, home, note, robe, snake, jeep, feet
Group B: her, girl, turn, hurt, first, were, card, part, start, are
Group C: more, store, stand, star, blew, flew, new, stone, sting, ring
We are still working on developing good sentences using our word wall words. Our goal is to use nice, neat writing, spaces between our words, capitals at the start of sentences, and periods at the end of sentences. Some of us were unable to finish the work this morning, after being given over an hour to complete it, so it is coming home for homework. Please check with me to make sure.
In Phys Ed we are still working on our basketball skills. Today there were stations. One station was practicing shooting at the net, another was throwing and catching the ball against the wall, one was dribbling practice, and another was passing practice with a partner, the final station was some fitness with hula hoops.
This afternoon we continued with graphing. We cannot move on to adding and subtracting until we complete what we need to for graphing. Today we practiced collecting data and developing different graphs, following a quick review; plot, bar, and pictographs.
This week at school:
-ELA - word wall words, developing good sentences
-Math - graphing

Welcome to March!
This morning we did our regular morning meeting with the warm up dance, then spent some time with the Grade 1 class reading together.
After Phys. Ed. we practiced our word wall words. There were five options we had:
-Scrabble write - vowels and consonants were worth points and we had to add up the total of the word
-ABC order
-Choo Choo - writing all the words together as one big word, but with each word as a different color
-Rhyming Words
-BIG and small
Ask me what ways I practiced them today!
Following recess we finished our journal writing on Caring for Others. We started it yesterday after brainstorming all the ways Caring for Others looks like, feels like, and sounds like. A few ideas we came up with were:
-listening to others
-stopping a bully
-using the 9 problem solving strategies (the wheel)
-being kind and respectful
-using the buddy bench outside
-playing with others and including others
After lunch we had music then math. In math we continued graphing. This is the final week for graphing, next week we start addition and subtraction. Today we learned and practiced how to collect data before making a graph. Together we came up with the following 5 steps:
1. choose a topic
2. create a question about your topic
3. pick 4 option for people to choose from
4. collect your data using a chart and tally marks
5. write the number of tally marks
Tomorrow we learn how to create a pictograph using our data!
Reminders:
-March Book orders due Friday
-Home Reading
-Anyone with homework still at home, that needs to come back to school as soon as possible
